Freedom of speech is one of the most fundamental rights that individuals enjoy. It is fundamental to the existence of democracy and the respect of human dignity. It is also one of the most dangerous rights, because freedom of speech means the freedom to express one's discontent with the status quo and the desire to change it.
However, in a society or community, freedom cannot be total - we can only act in ways we wish if we do not prevent others also acting as they wish.
Freedom of expression is limited by laws on blasphemy (attacks on God), pornography (sexually explicit material), libel (protection of one's reputation), sedition (advocating the overthrow of the government) and vilification (hate speech).
Some people see these restrictions, especially those related to vilification, as an attempt to force people to conform to political correctness.
