I would be less than honest to say that the debate about multiculturalism in the 60s was not assisted by having convinced a large part of the Left in Australia, including the Communist Party and some of the Labor Party, that it was in the best interests of the labour movement to do this and ignore it. We kept saying, ''how can you be relevant when three-quarters of your members are not informed, are not involved, are not empowered?'' So the ethnic branches appeared. And some people were shaken to their foundations: “What’s going to happen?...”
