Since the early 20th century the term bludger has had two meanings. It is used to describe a person who is lazy or idle, or who takes something for nothing and so appears to live off the efforts of others.
Bludger is hot because it is used as a term of abuse to suggest that people are exploiting something. For example, calling someone a “dole bludger” implies that they are exploiting the unemployment benefits system. This is considered very “un-Australian”
The term bludger is particularly hot when it is used to stereotype all individuals from a particular group without consideration for their specific circumstances.
