I consider the massive attack by John Howard on multiculturalism in 1988 to have been perhaps the watershed in the struggle over multiculturalism. But we defeated that too, both from the Labor Party, but also from within the Liberal Party.

I guess then, we’ve seen more subtle attacks now. In the 1990s we’ve seen more subtle attacks and criticism of multiculturalism, we haven’t seen the same up front ‘let’s get rid of it’ agenda in the same way that we did in, say, the critical fight in 1988.
