Geoffrey Blainey thought we were going to run into troubles. John Howard at one stage thought we were going to run into troubles with the development of the intake of people from Asia. And there’s been lots of others - I mean they’re only part of the stream of people. There are a lot of people in the Labor Party who thought the worst decision we’ve ever made was to drop the White Australia policy.

And when you consider that we are talking about thirty-five years and have a look at the advances that we’ve made, if you just sit down soberly and look at Australia and say “Where were we thirty-five years ago on these questions?” - the advances have been almost revolutionary.
